Philippine Independence Day Special: Marvel’s First Filipino Super-Team

Greetings from Manila, Philippines!

Today, we’re celebrating 110 years of Philippine Independence. To commemorate this awesome anniversary, I think it’s just appropriate that I introduce to you Marvel’s first Filipino super-team, the Triumph Division, that debuted last week in Invincible Iron Man #2!

Red Feather! St. George! Mighty Mother! Anitun! Fighter One! The Wishing Man! The Great Mongoose! WTF, right?! No, I’m kidding. I’m happy to see Filipinos represented in the Marvel U. Really, I am. Anyway, get a load of how Salvador Larroca drew Filipinos!

That’s pretty accurate, if I say so myself. A little too chocolatey, but no biggie. All in all, I’m pretty stoked to see Filipinos in my comics. Not even the fact that there were monks in the creative team’s depiction of Manila bothered me. Monks. In Manila. Oy.

To the Triumph Division, welcome to the Marvel U’s Manila, Philippines! Make your fellow Filipinos proud, you guys! Oh hey, look. One of those out-of-place monks is trying to tell you guys something…

Well, it was good while it lasted. Happy Philippine Independence Day, guys!

Yeah saw this from some other post too and the Monks in Manila and the odd character names (except perhaps Anitun) are indeed off. Didn’t even exert much effort to do some research.

But wait, is that the Quiapo Church in the background?

  • Francis says:

Wait… they are dead? What kind of heroes are they if they died on that kind of explosion?? That sucks!

  • BaseGuardian says:

I hope I’m not too late, happy I.D to you and by the way, the heroes had their glory time

  • Baddie says:

@BaseGuardian: Thanks! And yeah, they had their 15 minutes of fame. Which ended in a blaze of glory!

Putanaydana, ampangit.

  • Mikel says:

Dapat sina lastikman, darna captain barbel at si kamandag nalang pinasabog nila eh… tsk tsk tsk… sayang naman…

  • Jer says:

Well… the villain is still alive, thats good, as long as theres a bad guy, there will always be people to stop him… Unless he killed himself killing the other pinoy super heroes…

Were they Mutants or did they get their powers the old fashion way? If they were Mutants… and they had kids, they might have a 2nd generation…

Yes… I believe Marvel dropped the ball… they should have at least left one hero to join the International X-men… hehehe
