According to Newsarama, he passed away Sunday due to a sudden heart attack.

I was never a big fan, but I enjoyed seeing his art whenever I got the chance. He has this clean and dynamic style that just brings the fun in reading comics to another level. To anyone who makes comics more fun for me, I give my utmost respect. Vaya con Dios, Mr. Wieringo.
